As we leave Thanksgiving through Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we find ourselves at what we now know to be Giving Tuesday. Bill Gates coined the phrase, stating, “You may have heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. There’s another day you might want to know about: Giving Tuesday. The idea is pretty straightforward. On the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, shoppers take a break from their gift-buying and donate what they can to charity.” We encourage you to open your wallets, free some time in your schedule and open your hearts to community involvement in your local area.
Here at Beyond Tutoring and Learning Lab LA, our founder has committed one hour pro bono for every hour we bill. So what does that mean? It means for every hour your buy, we tutor, we advocate or we mentor for our clients, we help a client who cannot pay our fee. This client may be a foster youth, a student with disability in an underserved community, a first time college applicant (which we have helped several get scholarships and into college without charge) and an English Language Learner who needs extra scaffolding to get through her classes.
This school term, through our giving, we have donated over 1000 hours to our local community because we stand for the idea that we must give in order to receive. We commit that when you work with us to help your student achieve, you will be helping your local community. In this spirit we have doubled our hourly service for the packages bought this weekend, and we look toward the future where we can give even more to the local community that we are so grateful to serve. This is both our gift to the community, to our clients and to ourselves. In closing we leave you with this: Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. (William Arthur Ward)
We want you to not only hear our gratitude but see it expressed in your community. Thank you for reading and happy #GivingTuesday.
